Pushing Water Around

What are the ramifications of residential irrigation? What of agricultural, corporate, resort? How can we reduce without having to call it a sacrifice?

We are clearly irrigating when we connect the hoses around our yard and turn the sprinklers on. We do that out of habit, partially the habit of preferring greener grass to yellower grass.

But when we shop at a store or mall with acres of rich, watered lawns on it grounds, play golf at a resort with a couple miles of green fairways, buy vegetables grown in semi-desert, we are also participating in irrigation.
